Emergency Dental Q & A

What are Emergency Dental Services?

If there is any sudden issue with your teeth or gums this is a dental emergency. If an injury goes beyond the mouth or is life threatening you should go directly to an emergency room at a hospital. The most common dental emergencies involve damage to teeth or damage to dental objects like implants, bridges, fillings and crowns.

How Do You Handle A Knocked Out Tooth?

When an adult tooth is knocked out for any reason, it can be an extremely scary situation. Like with many emergencies, it is important to understand what to do. First and foremost, a knocked-out adult tooth can sometimes be re-implanted but only if you get to a dentist quickly and take care of the tooth correctly. The tooth should only be touched by the crown (the part of the tooth that is usually visible). It should be rinsed off with tap water. If possible the tooth should be placed back in the person’s mouth who lost it. If not, it should be kept in a saline solution (most first aid kits have a solution specifically for lost teeth) or kept in milk. For the person who lost the tooth, if there is bleeding you should use gauze or a clean cloth to put pressure on the wound and stop the bleeding. If there is pain or swelling, you should use an ice pack or a cold compress to help relieve the pain and stop the swelling.

Is A Chipped Tooth An Emergency?

A chipped or cracked tooth might not be an emergency, but no matter what you should have it looked at. In some cases a small chip or crack can be purely cosmetic especially if it only impacts the enamel (the outermost layer of your tooth). But it could also lead to your tooth breaking in the future or lead to infection if the dentin or tooth pulp is exposed. No matter what, you should call a dentist so that they can provide a professional opinion.

Types Of Dental Emergencies & How To Handle Them:

Severe Toothache

A common sign that you have a serious dental issue is a toothache. If you have throbbing pain or extreme sensitivity, especially when putting pressure on a tooth, this is often a sign of a serious underlying issue. For example, an infection at the root of the tooth can often cause pain that radiates into the jaw and the side of the face.

What To Do: Call a dentist right away for a same-day appointment, and use a cold compress or ice pack to help with the pain/swelling.

When a tooth breaks or cracks it exposes the dentin and pulp to bacteria. This can quickly lead to a bacterial infection that can cause serious problems for both your oral health and your overall health. Cracks, like cavities can make it easy for bacteria to enter the tooth and cause significant damage in a short period of time. Moreover, cracks can jeopardize the structural integrity of your tooth.

What To Do: If the tooth pulp (the pink innermost layer of a tooth) or dentin (a yellowish-brown layer between the enamel and pulp) is exposed you need to see a same-day dentist. If your tooth is only chipped or slightly cracked you should still aim to see a dentist soon. Any damage to a tooth can potentially lead to problems in the future.

One of the most common dental emergencies is a lost adult tooth. There are very specific things you need to do if a tooth is knocked out. First and foremost never handle a lost tooth by the root (the part of the tooth that is usually under the gumline).

What To Do: Call an emergency dentist and schedule an appointment. If you have a first aid kit on hand check to see if there is a tooth-saving kit. These kits have a special solution you can put the tooth in while you are on your way to the dentist that helps preserve the tooth. If you can see a dentist within an hour it may be possible to reattach the lost tooth. If you do not have a tooth-saving kit you can submerge the tooth in milk or attempt to hold the tooth in your mouth.

A medical emergency refers to any life-threatening condition that requires a trip to the ER or emergency ward of a hospital. A dental emergency refers to any dental issue that requires immediate attention. For example, if a patient were to have a serious head injury that also knocked out their teeth, it would still be a medical emergency because there would be concerns regarding a concussion. But if a person simply had a tooth knocked out or a filling/crown/bridge suddenly broken while they were eating, that would be a dental emergency.

Yes, our office in Lawrence Massachusetts takes walk-in appointments and provides many same-day dental services like same-day dental crowns. Where other offices have to work with local dental labs to get dental crowns made (requiring multiple visits spaced weeks apart) our office can create dental crowns and other dental implements in the office.

MassHealth does cover emergency dental services. Our Lawrence Massachusetts office accepts MassHealth dental insurance. If you have questions about dental coverage through MassHealth, please contact their team or contact us so we can discuss coverage at our office.

If a teenager or adult loses an adult tooth there are a few things you should do. First and foremost, if there is bleeding, you should use gauze or a clean cloth and apply pressure on the bleeding to help the blood clot. If there is pain or swelling, a cold compress or ice pack can be used. As for the tooth, never touch the roots of the tooth, always handle the tooth by its crown. Rinse it under cool water to get rid of any dirt. The tooth needs to be placed in either a saline solution (found in many first aid kits), milk, or into the patient’s mouth if possible. A patient needs to see a dentist within an hour to potentially reimplant the tooth while the tissue on the tooth is still alive. Otherwise, you may need to consider tooth replacement treatments like a dental bridge or dental implant.

Toothaches can be dental emergencies. If the pain is severe, recurring, or constant, or if the pain is brought on by putting pressure on a tooth, you should see a dentist right away. Any dental issues that prevent you from going about your normal day to day life should always be looked at as soon as possible.
