Teeth Whitening Q & A

Why Should You Get Your Teeth Whitened In Office

There are a couple of different ways to whiten your teeth. You may even notice that many different tubes of toothpaste claim that they have whitening benefits. While this is true to an extent, brushing your teeth with whitening toothpaste won’t likely create a dramatic result. That said, there is never a bad reason to make sure you are brushing your teeth frequently. There are over-the-counter products that can help whiten your teeth but there are some drawbacks. First and foremost, if used incorrectly you could accidentally whiten your teeth in an uneven pattern or even stain your teeth. Additionally, products provided at a dental office tend to have provide better effects.

How Does In-Office Teeth Whitening Work?

Different dentists use different products to whiten teeth. A common whitening tool is to coat the teeth with a whitening solution that is usually made up with either hydrogen peroxide or carbamide peroxide. A laser is then used to activate the bleaching agent on your teeth which will cause your teeth to show whiter.

Because this is done in-office there are some obvious benefits. Your dental team will ensure that the coating of the whitening solution is evenly spread across your teeth so there aren’t remaining stains or other imperfections. Additionally, this method is much more powerful and provides a whiter smile that lasts longer

When Should I Schedule Teeth Whitening?

If you are looking to dramatically reduce staining or discoloration before an event, you should start the process a few weeks to a month out. You may need more than a single treatment. While treatment results tend to be instant, it can sometimes require more than one treatment to get your full results if you have stained teeth. So if you are planning on whitening your teeth before a wedding or some other big event, consider making an appointment well in advance.

Frequently Asked Questions About Teeth Whitening

Is Teeth Whitening Safe?

Yes, teeth whitening is a safe dental treatment. It does not cause damage to the teeth, and sensitivity caused by teeth whitening is temporary. That said, it is always best to consult with your dentist about any dental treatment. They can make sure that your oral health comes first.

Teeth whitening results can last different amounts of time based on how you care for your teeth, your diet, and the teeth whitening method. For example, your results could last six months or up to two years, depending on those factors. Getting in-office whitening, taking care of your teeth daily with brushing and flossing, and avoiding coffee, wine, and other beverages that cause stains can help lengthen your results.

There are a few different methods for teeth whitening including:

  • In-office Whitening: These treatments typically involve putting a whitening solution on the teeth and then using a special light to activate the whitening agent.
  • At-Home Trays: Your dentist may create custom trays and provide you with a whitening solution that you can use at home. The results of this form of whitening are typically stronger than over-the-counter methods but weaker than in-office methods.
  • Over-the-Counter: There are many whitening products you can buy over the counter, including whitening strips. These whitening products tend to be weaker formulas and are designed for at-home use.

Teeth whitening should generally only be done once per year if you are getting in-office or other intensive treatments. If teeth whitening is done too regularly, it can start to weaken the enamel. That said, this is very dependent on the whitening solution and treatment you are specifically getting.

Results differ from patient to patient and depending on the treatment. That said, it is common to see a noticeable improvement rigth away. Typically, in-office whitening can help teeth get multiple shades whiter in a single session. That said, teeth that are stained yellow or brown will whiten more easily than teeth that have a grayish discoloration. Those teeth may need other cosmetic treatments like dental veneers.
